I've always wanted to grow some for myself. Then my friend Penny over at At Home in English Valley planted some and I was hooked. So chickadee number three and I picked up a bag of generic wheat-grass seed for $2.99 and went to town.
Then we waited.
And watered.
And sprayed.
That's right, sprayed. With a water bottle. The seeds need to stay moist, so I sprayed them pretty much every time I walked by. Within a day they had started to sprout like wildfire. It really was amazing to watch. Within four days or so it was magical.
My son and I really enjoyed watching the transformation.
Once they were sufficiently tall and fluffy I had to find a place for them. And what better place than my Ikea mini greenhouse? I know, don't even ask me why I even bought the thing, what with my black thumb and all. But I'm glad I did, since it ended up being perfect for them.
Right now I have them sitting on my vintage suitcase side table in the family room. I even broke down and picked up a small pot of "baby tears" to add into the mix. I think they go well together, don't you?
I really wanted to decorate the clay pots in some way, maybe stencil numbers on them or something. Still haven't gotten around to that yet. But overall I think they look really good.
Just a tip: We bought generic no-name seeds in a zip-lock bag for a really reasonable price. Don't be fooled by the fancy packets of seeds that say "organic" on them. Unless you're growing the grass for either feline or human consumption (which I was not) you don't really have to worry about the seeds being organic.
And since it grows so fast, be prepared to trim it every day. Seriously. If you don't, I promise that you'll have an extremely large, unkempt chia pet on your hands! But don't worry. Any pair of ordinary household scissors will do.
I'm hoping to hit a big flea market this weekend. It's one I've been looking forward to for a long time. I'll let you know how it goes.
Hope you're enjoying the weekend, friends!
xoxo

Hi Kathy, Here I am visiting in the early morning hours and see my name mentioned! You know I'm lovin your little greenhouse full of wheatgrass. So much fun for just a few dollars! Though of you...I haven't been to the Nada Farm Sale since our visit with Fifi...remember? Just too much work around here to travel, but boy, I sure wish I could have gone... Miss you my friend. Love, Penny
ReplyDeleteKathleen, you need my kitties! They'll mow it right down for you! Seriously, I love your vignette; it's so pretty!
ReplyDeleteHave seen a lot of it used in table settings - but never tried it myself. Good idea - thanks for sharing. Hope you have enjoyed the weekend.
ReplyDeleteKathleen,
ReplyDeleteYour grass looks great in that darling greenhouse. Also...thought I would let you know that you will be featured at my party on Monday.
Blessings,
Linda
I love this idea. You found the perfect spot for them. Thanks for the tip about the organic version.
ReplyDeleteI love the look of it. I've never tried growing it but I will seeking out some seeds now. Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteI have been planting everything imaginable in faux, this is so wonderful. I could plant this and have something live. So fun and it looks amazing. Great vignette. Thanks tons for joining Inspire Me. Hugs, Marty
ReplyDeleteThey look great in your little greenhouse, Kathleen! I've been feeling the need to change out what I have in mine currently. I guess I could go either way with either a couple of little plants or get some pots and do the grass.
ReplyDeleteI was just thinking too in your first couple of photos that my Son would enjoy watching that grow! What a great 'experiment', and it sure turned out nice looking in your terrarium!
ReplyDeleteI really like the wheat grass vignette your created in the little greenhouse. And, the baby tears on a pedestal is perfect for the middle.
ReplyDeleteThe wheat grass looks great ... especially in the little greenhouse. It all looks so cute sitting on the old suitcase :) Wendy
