Decorating with Birdcages

Some of you might recall this beautiful vintage birdcage I scored during my Michigan's Longest Garage Sale adventure this past summer.   I innocently asked you whether or not I should paint it and the resounding answer was no!  So I've left it alone for now, but I can't promise anything, especially once spring rolls around.

There are so many things you can do with birdcages from a decor standpoint.  I want to share some great birdcage decorating ideas with you, but first I want to share how I recently used my own birdcage.  I managed to clean it up and use it for Christmas decorating this year.  Chickadee number one inspired me to fill it with ornaments for a simple, yet festive, look.

I ended up with a ton of red ornaments from Goodwill after a post-Christmas score last year, and I was happy to have them this year to fill the new bird cage.  I used every one!

I added a pre-made burlap ribbon to the top of the cage.

I thought it worked well in my foyer vignette, but what I really want to see is a sparkling chandelier hanging from the inside of it.

Restoration Hardware

Now I've seen other so-called "bird cage chandeliers" come up when you google the term, but they're mostly just bird cages with a traditional light fixture inside of it.  Nope, not what I'm looking for. I'm talking the real deal, folks. A dripping-with-crystals true-blue chandelier like the one from Restoration Hardware.  

I've actually seen some small crystal chandys sold by Ikea and Hobby Lobby, so I'm pretty confident that if I don't find one in my thrifty travels first, I can pick one up there for a reasonable price when I'm ready to add one to my own bird cage. Stayed tuned for that transformation.

Since there are probably a million ways to incorporate bird cages into your everyday décor, I've taken the liberty of choosing just a few examples that I love and think are doable for just about anyone.

I've been known to do this myself -- place bird cages on top of books and fill them with natural elements.

I've even been known to place vintage books inside some of my bird cages, although I can't say that I have a bird cage that's anywhere near as impressive as this one!  Don't you just love it?

There are many ways to use them outside as well. I love how they're used for this casual farmhouse dinner.
