The words "wait and see" will never be music to my ears. Patience may be a virtue, but I was not blessed with it! Be that as it may, I have had to put my usual home projects on hold and take on a "wait and see" attitude as we prepare to move. What will my new kitchen be like? I have no idea! So why do I feel the need to make a kitchen sign NOW of all times? Because I'm a hopelessly creative DIY blogger, that's why! And we all know that idle hands are the devil's workshop. So better to keep busy I always say.
I have wanted to create some type of wooden kitchen sign for a long time now, and recently I've become obsessed with the notion. I even created a Pinterest board dedicated to it.

I'm still mulling over my options.
Should I buy precut letters at the craft store and just attach them together?
Should I pull a "Graphics Fairy" and use one of her amazing graphics? The only problem if I go this route is that I always have a really hard time deciding which graphic transfer method to use. None have worked particularly well for me, to be honest. What's your favorite transfer method for wood?
Should I hold out and look for a ready-made sign at a flea market or barn sale? This is fine if you're naturally patient, but as I said at the beginning of this post, patience is NOT my strong suit.
So looks like I'm back at square one.
I've been known to dabble in stencils, so maybe I'll make my own stencil and just paint the image onto wood.
Yes, the possibilities are endless. But isn't that what makes it fun?
Here are a few more samples for you to consider.
Notice where I'm probably going with this?

I've been obsessing over signs for the kitchen too. I have one in mind that I'd like to make but it's intimidating to me. I guess you can't hurt anything by trying. :)
ReplyDeleteI know what you are saying - A "Wait and See" sign in my home would not be appropriate, as I also am lacking a bit of patience these days.LOL
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to seeing what you come up with.
Enjoy your evening.
I love your Pinterest page of kitchen signs. I'm thinking you might make a sign with "Eat" on it. I can't wait to see what you make! You've got me thinking now.
ReplyDeleteIt will be fun to see what you end up with for a sign for your kitchen, Kathleen. The BAD thing about the Graphic Fairy is that you can spend HOURS there trying to figure out what you like best....or maybe that is a GOOD thing!?! xo Diana
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to seeing what you create. I have such a hard time deciding on signs, just finished a couple that I made with my Silhouette.
ReplyDeleteI love signs, Kathleen! You could also try doing one on wood by printing out what you want it to say and use either transfer {carbon} paper or pencil scribbled on the back of the letters to transfer it. I am not artistic at all and did the Hotel de Paris sign for my master bedroom with the "pencil lead on the back" way. I was really pleased with the way it turned out and you can use whatever font you like.
ReplyDeleteOK now you have left us hanging...Which sign will it be??? I love the ones where the letters are cut out, but I think you would need a ban saw for that? Can't wait to see what you come up with!

Kathleen, I know whatever you decide to use will be wonderful! I bought a bunch of large vintage letters at auction. I was able to get EAT from the letters and plan on hanging them in the kitchen.
