Have yourself a merry little Christmas

Let your heart be light
From now on, our troubles will be out of sight...
This is by far one of my all time favorite Christmas songs.
So it makes sense that, months ago, when I first received Pottery Barn's
I think it was around $129.00 plus shipping. I was totally convinced that I could
turn one of my thrift store mirrors into the spitting image of theirs.
So I ripped out the page and put it in a pile along with all my other "someday" projects.
But as Christmas grew nearer and I hadn't even started it I had to admit that it was too
late in the scheme of things to be able to pull it off in time for Christmas. The only other
blogger I could find that had done a knock-off had used chemicals and a Silhouette
machine, neither of which I own. Time to improvise!
I originally used this as a Thanksgiving chalkboard, with the words
"Give Thanks" on it. I figured it was about time to switch things up.
For starters, I practiced free-handing the song lyrics on a piece of scrap paper.
You have to understand that I am sorely inept when it comes to drawing
anything, fonts included. But I really wanted this to hang over our mantel
this Christmas so I gave it my best shot.

Unfortunately, my iPhone pictures are pretty poor quality. Couple that
with horrible natural light in our house and you get what you get. I wish
Here it is above the yet-to-be-decorated mantel.
As I've already mentioned before, the wall space above our
mantel is huge! And the actual mantel shelf is six feet above the
ground! While I don't like the height, I do like the brick.

I finally took a few shots with the lights on (gasp!) and I think
that helped a little bit.

Here it is once the mantel was decorated.
Now you may recall my obsession love of reindeer from last Christmas.
Of course I had to bring them out again this year.
I think the pop of red is just what the otherwise neutral colored vignette needed.
I'm not sure if I'll be sharing any more Christmas joy before the big day.
Right now I'm nursing a bad cold and I'm still homeschooling chickadee
number three for the rest of this week. After that it's wrapping and baking!
Blessings for a wonderful
Christmas season
to you and your family.

ReplyDeleteYou did a great job, Kathleen. I applaud you for even attempting this. I am horrible at writing on chalkboards. It looks wonderful on your mantel with the reindeer.
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas!
Hope you feel better soon! Nothing is worse than a bad cold! Love your chalkboard! Your home looks so festive!

So cute! I am sharing with my sister! She is PB junkie!
ReplyDeleteSo cute! I love recreating things from catalogs--saves some serious dough and it makes it that much more special!
ReplyDeleteKathleen, you always come up with the most wonderful ideas. I love this one. May have to try one for myself. Pinning. Cathy
ReplyDeleteI love this project. You saved a ton on $ and it looks great. I commend you for baring your soul on the nitty gritty design process. Coming up with projects is messy and we are our own worst critics. I will pin this on my Christmas board.

What a cute chalkboard sign. I think you did a great job. I had no idea you did that free hand. Hope you had a great Christmas.

PB is such a great inspiration...unfortunately their prices are not that great. I love how you can recreate something for much, much, much cheaper.
