Don't you just love it when you make a great find at a great price, and then
see it elsewhere for a ton more? It's what I live for. Seriously. Here's a look
at my latest.
Ok, so it's not exactly my latest, but I'm just getting around to sharing it with you.
I found this awesome, plain, slipcovered ottoman at, yes, Wal-Mart, some
time last year. I knew when I saw it that it had potential and the price was right.
I think it was around $20.00. Which for me is a lot to pay. For anything. But
I had seen similar ones before and I knew what they cost.
Case in point.
on sale for $449.00 - $599.00, depending on the fabric you choose. You read that
right. It's a mere 17" square by 18" high so I'm not quite sure why it's so ungodly
expensive. It does have storage going for it, but other than that, well, it's an ottoman.
I had grand plans to stencil/paint something really cool on my ottoman but that
hasn't happened yet. I'm not sure where it will ultimately be used, but for the photo
shoot I placed it in one of my teen daughters' bedrooms. I thought it would go well
with the PB Teen desk chair knock-off (IKEA hack) that I made last year but
haven't posted about yet.
I hope to share how I made this chair cover in another post.
Here's the ottoman in my daughter's room. It's sitting in front of the roadkill
and it looks great, especially since she has other white furniture in her room.
Right now the ottoman just happens to be hiding underneath an Ikea faux sheepskin
rug. I figured we'd go along with the furry theme that was already going on with the
chair. And, well, faux fur rugs are HOT nowadays. Who knew, when I picked mine
up for a song at Ikea about a year ago that they'd be splattered all over blogland?
The bright pop of color comes from, of all places, PB Teen. Yes, I broke down
and bought my girls PB Teen pillow covers a few years ago for Christmas
(major sale and free shipping!) Then I picked up pillow forms at, you guessed it,
Ikea. I think the shining star pillow adds just the right amount of color here.
This drawing of the Empire State building is a vintage find my daughter picked
up at an estate sale in Michigan a few summers ago. (Chip off the old block!)
We researched the artist, Bernard Buffet (1928-1999), and it turns out he was a
very famous French artist who was, and still is, very popular in the United States.
The poster is actually an advertisement for a show of his works that was held at
the Findlay Gallery in Chicago in 1959.
Pretty cool.
So the question remains, what should I do with my ottoman?
Pottery Barn has some suggestions for using them in the bedroom.
I absolutely love how it looks stashed under this mirrored vanity table.
Kind of like in my daughter's room, minus the expensive Pottery Barn
table.....hhmm. Perhaps we'll keep it there?
Here they're used as extra storage/table/seating in the bedroom. Perfect for when
you don't want to overwhelm the room with a clunky bench or trunk at the end of
your bed.

your bed.
Again it's used in a bedroom, as extra storage/seating/tabletop. Love it. I also
love the beadboard walls, lattice headboards and coral-based lamps.
I guess it's no surprise then that I, too, chose to put it in a bedroom.
I think it goes nicely with the white vanity table and side cabinet.
In case you hadn't already guessed it, this is all happening in a closet. Yes,
a closet. When wall space is at a premium you improvise. In the name of keeping
it real I wanted to include a shot of at least one half of the bifold closet doors you
see on your right. I'd love to paint them white but that's a project for another day.
I had a heck of a time making this PB Teen faux fur chair knock-off.
I still haven't decided if it's a success or a fail.
More on that later.
And even though our ottoman/cube isn't the $449 Pottery Barn version, I'm
pretty happy with it. My daughter was so happy with how it looked in her room
that she has stolen it and refuses to give it back. Guess I should have known.
I'll be sure to share the ottoman again when and if I ever get around to stenciling it.
Would you leave it as is
or would you stencil it?

OMG I am no help at all...I don't know? If you stencil it you may limit its use other places, but then again to make another slip cover isn't that hard....OK, I have made a decision...Stencil it! I love the closet vanity!

I like it just where it is, but if you stencil it, maybe something real simple like a grain sack stripe. Great job!
I love the chair! I want to snuggle up in it right now. I definitely say success.
I love your cube/ottoman! I would never pay that ridiculous price from Pottery Barn either. That's insane for something that small anyway. I like the idea of stenciling it. Since it's all white you could do something French with black ink. Love the furry chair cover you made too. I saw that HomeGoods sells those fur rugs now like Ikea too.
Wow - that's a steal! I love those little cube ottomans - so many things that you can do with them. Yours looks great where it is!
I love the cube! Thanks for linking up with Home Sweet Home!
