Simple DIY Valentine's Chalkboard

January 11, 2016

I have to make a confession. Valentine's Day is just not a big holiday around my house. It's more like a nonexistent one. If I've ever "decorated" for Valentine's Day it's been very subdued, and definitely what I'd consider tasteful (to each her own, right?). If not for my Daily Dose of DIY Blog Hop Group I'd probably be skipping it altogether this year. But our theme this month is to create a Valentine's project. So I jumped right onto the Pinterest bandwagon and looked me up some Valentine's projects. Not surprisingly, this girl ended up with a DIY Valentine's chalkboard project.
Let me start off by saying that I was inspired by Desiree's chalkboard over at Camelot Art Creations. Be sure to stop over there and pay her a friendly visit! Now on to my project......
I used my ever-so-versatile vintage DIY (as in I MADE the chalkboard) chalkboard that I use for all my holiday chalkings. Is that a word? Anyway, I most recently put it to good use over Christmas as a Christmas Countdown/Advent Calendar.

It ended up getting a great reception from the blog world, as well as family and friends, and I really loved it. I might just have to do it again next Christmas. But for now it's sporting a Valentine's Day-like sentiment. I just free-handed the design since it seemed simple enough. I wish I were a better artist but some things in life just weren't meant to be.

Once again it's in the foyer, along with my favorite slipper chair and some pillows that were originally being used for Christmas décor. But once I took away the "Noel" pillow I realized that I could leave the other two there as complimentary Valentine's Day décor as well, due to the lovely reds.

I also chose to put my thrift store basket/tray on top of the round basket tabletop, still filled with red ornaments. It was actually one of my favorite Christmas displays this year. So simple, but really packs a colorful punch. Again, the fact that they're red makes them Valentine's Day-worthy décor in my book!
At least that's my story and I'm sticking with it. What do you think?

The arrow and heart banner was a Target dollar bin purchase. It's actually my daughter's, but she kindly let me use it for this project.
I thought the banner was adorable. The basic design was made with regular chalk, but I added the x's and o's with a "chalk pen." I think the chalk pens' colors are much nicer and more vivid than regular chalk, however, they do not always erase with ease like regular chalk does. I didn't want to risk marring my favorite chalkboard for all eternity - hence, why I only used one for the small details like x's and o's.

I love how each side of the heart is a double sided arrow. You can see it at the top of the heart.
And at the bottom.

Just draw a heart, add the arrow marks and some leaves and voila!

You can use any kind of font or script for the word "Love." Or maybe write something else inside the heart altogether?  If you'd like to see another one of my nontraditional Valentine's Day decorations, pictured below, you can see how I made it here.

I have to admit I'm a big sap when it comes to Valentine's Day and for a girl who usually ignores it all together you put together a lovely vignette with the pillows, red ornaments, and DIY chalk board. I'll be checking out the other posts on the blog hop. sb

"Love" it--pun intended. Not only are my Christmas decorations still up, but I haven't given Valentine's Day a single thought--you're way ahead of me :)

Kathleen, I love it. I am so enamored with chalkboards and this one is adorable. I see I will have to hit Target up for one of those banners for sure. Love your red pops for Valentines. Cathy

Great job - great way to create Valentines Decor - with things you already have and that do double duty :) I'm not big on Valentine's decor either - I have just a few little things but it's mostly just some red accents and some paper valentines that are easy to store.
