Welcome, friends, to another fun-filled Thrill of the Hunt post where I share my latest thrifty (and usually) vintage finds with you.
Have you ever been out thrifting, glanced at something, and just knew that it was special/collectible and/or resaleable? Happens to me all the time. Although sometimes I score bigger than I do other times. Case in point.
I found this interestingly shaped porcelain cup at my local Goodwill, and I knew it was different (in a good way) and a collectible.
While still standing in the aisle I googled "Karlovy Vary" (Carlsbad) and learned that it is a city in the Czech Republic that is rife with spring/mineral waters that visitors come from near and far to drink. They say the water is curative and the cup is now known as a "spa cup." Apparently, the spa cup originated in the 17th century and is now part of Czech folklore.
You're supposed to sip the water through the handle!
I'm not able to read the maker's mark. Kerano, maybe? When I google that I find nothing pertaining to spa cups. Anyone have any ideas? All I know is that I've seen them offered for as much as $49.99 and as little as $12.99. I'm not sure what makes one more valuable than the other. I still think it's pretty cool. Karlovy Vary Czech Spa Cup is SOLD.
Next up is my Popegosser china. I knew when I saw these gilded-rim floral plates that they were special.
I think they're called bread and butter plates.
Here's the maker's mark.
I got three for .99 cents apiece. I've seen them offered for $6.99 apiece.
Should I use at least one of them on my plate wall or sell them? I'll need to think about that.
I fell in love with this porcelain sugar bowl and creamer at first sight.
I loved the lines running down the sides of the sugar bowl as well as the creamer.
And the gilding was an added benefit.
When I looked it up (Winterling Marktleuthen Bavaria) I found that it was indeed a collectible. The Winterling Marktleuthen Bavaria porcelain sugar and creamer set is AVAILABLE.
Then we come to my Christmas ornament find. I always joke about the fact that the ghost of Christmas past always finds me at thrift stores. And usually it's a pretty good find that finds me.
But not this time, apparently.
When I saw the name "Hallmark," I snatched up this skating Christmas bear ornament. That's because I learned not too long ago that some Hallmark ornaments were quite collectible and worth a lot of money.
Only I hadn't noticed that the box said it was from 2015! So, sadly, the joke was on me. But as one of my kids pointed out, I just have to hold onto this baby for another 20 years and it'll be considered vintage! I think one of them will be getting this for Christmas this year.....

Those floral plates are gorgeous--I'd keep at least one ;) Love the cream and sugar set too! I think anyone who thrifts regularly is bound to make an occasional mistake. Not long ago, I purchased a pair of collectibles that I planned to sell. As is my habit, I inspected them carefully--not once but twice, before purchasing them. Wouldn't you know when I got home, I found a repaired crack in one! At least someone had done a great repair job. Live and learn!
Such pretty finds this week, Kathleen :) I really enjoyed reading about the Czech sipping cup--all fun, new info for me. We live near several springs, including Saratoga Springs, Ballston Spa, and Sharon Springs. One of my favorite side trips when we lived in England led us to Bath, where the Romans created several baths utilizing underground hot springs. Great post!
I guess that's why I don't go thrifting to sell...I'd snatch something up only to find out it wasn't vintage. Lol. He's cute anyway. Love the pretty plates and sugar & creamer set and the sipping cup is a cool find. I had never heard of those. Looks like you had a mostly successful hunt.

Those are pretty good scores anyway even if you didn't notice the date on the ornament. I like the spa cup, but don't know a thing about it. You always find true collectibles & I find mostly junk! Sometimes I get lucky, but I probably don't visit often enough.
Fun finds Kathleen! I especially love the blue floral plates. So pretty!
Some people are a little slow to the party when it comes to yearly collectibles, so maybe if someone wants to start the collecting the bear ornaments on the third year, there would be a market for the first and second year. So, don't get discouraged too quickly. Investigate the market, and see where you stand!

Thank you for teaching us about spa cups! Never seen one before. A lot of those mineral waters were really nasty tasting; that's why they were supposed to be good for you! I loved the blue rose plates; and I am a pink rose fanatic; maybe it's just ROSES? Whenever I find a Hallmark ornament and the price is right, I always get it, because, somewhere out there, there is a collector waiting to find it. A teddy collector, a Hallmark collector, a mother with a child named Mary, know knows! I have priced stuff with cracks, fleabites, etc. at bargain prices and sold them. Neat mends don't bother someone who wants a "shelf piece."

I posted pics of my spa cup on your Facebook page that this blog was on. I found mine at an antique store. Yours is the only other one I've ever seen!
