Painted Farmhouse Stool

March 22, 2018

It never cases to amaze me what a coat of paint can do to an old piece of furniture. Okay, two coats. My painted farmhouse stool roadside rescue is a living testament to the amazing transformative properties of paint!

I picked this one up from the side of the road, thrown out for the trash by a neighbor. I loved it immediately. Someone had taken the time to paint this utilitarian stool a fun shade of farmhouse green. I wondered how old it really was.

It certainly looked well-loved, paint splatters and all. The original color appeared to be black. As much as I loved the green, I felt the pull of the White Paint Fairy (ever heard of her?) tugging at me, urging me to paint it white. And so it goes.

I started off by wiping it down, then putting on two coats of Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paint in Fluff. I love that color! I've used it for a number of projects including my Vintage Jewelry Armoire Upcycle, my Three-Tiered Farmhouse Stand and my DIY Paint-Dipped Three Legged Table. Talk about a breath of fresh air!

I knew the lighter color would definitely add to the spring vibe I was trying to accomplish in the living room. Plus, along with my white vase and faux spring floral bundles, it really created the look I was going for! These photos were taken pre-sanding.

I picked up these two peony bouquets and the ceramic geometric vase at Michael's for 50% off. If you're not so lucky, you can always pick up bouquets of dark pink peonies, light pink peonies, light pink tulips or light pink hydrangeas to spruce up your decor with a pop of spring color.

I used a galvanized farmhouse cake stand to create some added height to the arrangement.

I just love the geometric lines of the vase. Mine is about 5 inches tall. However, you can find similar ones in all shapes and sizes:

* Ren-Wil Cave Statue, Small, White Glossy

*   Kanodan Modern White Marbled Ceramic Flower Vase

 Privilege Large White Geometric

*  Geometric Ceramic White and Gold Vase

Origami-Inspired White Ceramic Geometric Vase

I thought the trailing greens of the bouquet added a nice touch.

As much as I loved that crisp, fresh look of the white paint I knew I had one more step before I was done. So I grabbed my sand paper and got to work.

And now it was done! I couldn't help myself and just had to throw in some tiny whimsical bunnies as a nod to Easter (which I can't believe is right around the corner).

I will definitely use it to display seasonal elements, but I can also see it functioning as a side table in those hard to reach corners that need a little sumpin sumpin. Here my small farmhouse tray carries a cup of tea and some biscuits, which fits perfectly atop my roadside rescue-turned-painted-farmhouse-stool. And speaking of stools, who knows? I might even use it as one of those, too!

What an amazing find Kathleen!! At first I thought you were just going to leave it clean but I'm so happy that you distressed it to bring out that fun color underneath! :)

You can most definitely transform anything with a little bit of paint! I am glad you ended up sanding back some of that white to let the green show through too. It really gives this little stool some extra character!

You really scored with that curbside find! Stools are so handy and useful, I can't believe someone threw it out, but it was your lucky day. I love the white too...it's always my preferred go-to color. You can find so many ways to use/accessorize with it.

White paint works wonders, doesn't it? Love it next to your mantel and styled so pretty for spring!
