Today I'm sharing my pumpkin pie spice sugar scrub recipe.

Pumpkin spice is in the air, folks. Yes, it's pumpkin spice time again. Seems like it was only yesterday when everyone and their mother was out there ordering pumpkin spice lattes at Starbucks. Well, guess what? They're back! And so is this scrumptious recipe for pumpkin pie spice (yes, pie is in the name of the spice) sugar scrub that I just know you'll be dying to make for yourself -- and maybe for a lucky friend or two -- this fall season.

small to medium-sized mixing bowl

small lidded jars (4 - 4.5 oz.)

1 tsp. (minimum) pumpkin pie spice (+ additional tsps. as per personal preference)

*NOTE: It was difficult to find pumpkin pie spice in the stores. I got the impression that it really is a seasonal (autumnal) spice and that they don't normally have it the rest of the year. Look for it in special displays and end cap displays around fall time of year. Don't wait until it's close to Thanksgiving to purchase it, I'm afraid they'll all be sold out by then. And stock up! The cheapest I found (by far) was at Aldi's. It ain't cheap, so you might want to shop around.

vanilla flavoring/extract (recommendations below)

3/4 cup brown sugar

1/4 cup white sugar

1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil (or grapeseed oil or coconut oil)

Makes approximately 21 ounces of scrub (I was able to fill four 4 oz. jars and one 4.5 oz. jar.)

First, combine your 3/4 cup brown sugar and 1/4 cup white sugar in mixing bowl. Mix well with spatula.

Then add 1 tsp. pumpkin pie spice and mix again.

McCormick All Natural Pure Vanilla Extract, 1 fl oz

Now it's time to add vanilla flavoring. The brand I used (Soap Expressions Vanilla from Hobby Lobby) was not a favorite of mine. I added about 20 drops. Unfortunately, the smell was not that of a natural, true vanilla. It was more of an alcohol-laced smell. So I took matters into my own hands and grabbed some real vanilla extract from the kitchen cabinet and added approximately two teaspoons to the mix. Once mixed in, the added vanilla extract helped to create a more pleasant scent. I also added more pumpkin pie spice for good measure and gave it all a good mix.

Based on my experience I would recommend that you use pure vanilla extract instead of vanilla scent, adding in a little at a time until you're satisfied with the overall aroma. Unless, of course, you have a vanilla scent that you absolutely love and would rather use.

Filippo Berio Olive Oil, 25.3-Ounce

Lastly, add in 1/4 cup of extra virgin olive/grapeseed oil/coconut oil and again, mix well. I did not use coconut oil since it has such a strong smell and I thought it would be competing with the pumpkin and vanilla smells. I got my olive oil at Dollar Tree. If you want the scrub more liquid-y just add more oil, a small amount at a time, until you reach the desired consistency. I like mine more on the scrubby side.

And here it is in all it's scrubby goodness.

I punched holes in tags I already had on hand and wrote the name of the scrub on them. I tied the tags onto the jars with decorative gold and white twine.

You're also going to need some form of scoop for the scrub. I found these darling wooden scoops on Etsy. In the list above I provide a link for small clear plastic scoops. If you'd like the wooden scoops that I used just leave a comment and I'll get back to you with the info. You can easily tie either type scoop onto the jars with the twine for gifting.

Yum. Don't you just want to dive right in? These scrubs are great for yourself or for family and friends around the holidays.

If pumpkin pie spice isn't your thing I also created a killer DIY lemon sugar scrub from scratch a few years ago that was a big hit.

Either way, DIY sugar scrubs are an easy, fairly inexpensive way to create some personal home spa treatments that pamper and help us out big time in the relaxation department. And we could ALL use that during the holidays, right? I'll be sending some off this week in a care package for my daughter and her roommate in college.

Well, that's it until next time, friends! I hope you enjoyed reading about my
