Simple Spring Tulip Basket

April 8, 2019

Spring decor doesn't have to be over the top in order to make a statement and add a fun, fresh sense of style to your home. And let's be honest -- if you're one of those people who isn't really decorating for Easter this year (ahem, yes, that's me) then decorating for Spring is for sure the next best thing. Today I want to share a quick and easy project that turned an old basket I had lying around into a super floral spring display.

While thrifting at Goodwill recently, I came across an old, whitewashed flat back hanging basket and fell in love. The age, the color, the look -- everything said bring me home. But -- you knew there was going to be a but -- I realized that I already had a similar basket at home. I didn't love mine as much but I knew I could tweak it and get a similar result. So back onto the store shelf it went, and a new paint project began.

Here she is in the before shot. Very plain and dark, nothing to write home about. I definitely wanted to lighten things up a bit as well as create more of a modern farmhouse vibe. You can also see that it's a grapevine basket -- meaning there were a lot of straggling vines that would make it pretty difficult to paint the thing, as was my intention.

I grabbed a pair of my gardening scissors and snipped off as many of the stragglers as I could in order to make it more of a smooth surface for painting.

Can of Rust-oleum Chalked Paint in Linen White

Then in came my Rust-oleum Chalked Paint in Linen White. Back in the fall I shared my first Rust-oleum Chalked Paint project with you after painting, of all things, faux pumpkins. I had a feeling it would work just as well on this basket and I can happily say that I was right.

Using a short handled paint brush (for better control) I dry brushed the entire basket, allowing some of the original brown color to peek through for contrast as seen above. Once done, however, I was not happy with the look. There was just too much dark brown still showing. Kind of reminded me of the shredded wheat cereal I was forced to eat for breakfast as a kid. So I went back and added another coat of paint.

I was definitely liking this look better.

My next step was to figure out what to put in the basket. Pretty much a no-brainer in light of the season. I filled it with light pink and hot pink faux tulips from Michael's. They were 60% off so they were only $2.00 a bunch.

I then added two peony stems from the Dollar Tree (seen here on the end) and it was complete.

It's actually hanging in our foyer now but I had fun playing with some outdoor shots on a beautiful day.

Here it's hanging on our patio.

And here it is hanging on our front door.

I really do think the transformation from dark to white makes it much more of a fun, modern farmhouse "spring" basket, don't you?

So how are you decorating
