Thrill of the Hunt #94

October 28, 2019

Welcome, friends, to another fun-filled Thrill of the Hunt post where I share my latest thrifty (and mostly) vintage finds with you. I'm excited to get started so here goes!

I'm so glad it's that time of year again when yard sales and estate sales abound. I picked up today's treasures at a local pop-up estate sale that has become one of my FAVORITE places to get awesome vintage finds.

Despite the fact that I swore I was not going to decorate for Halloween (and most certainly did not adhere to that vow), this particular display caught my attention at the estate sale. How could I not fall in love with a vintage chicken feeder filled with pumpkins with its own Halloween raven sitting guard? For $12 it was a bit pricey for me, but I knew it would cost a lot more at our local county flea markets. And the woman who runs these local "estate sales" (I love her) told me it was from a farm in Wisconsin. And who doesn't love a good back story?

It was hard to get a good picture of it, but it's just the perfect size to display in my seasonal vignettes. And I can fill it with other things besides pumpkins depending on the time of year ... dried hydrangeas, tea lights, faux lemons, pine cones, greenery, you name it.

I've seen some farmhouse decor fans use theirs as a plate rack.

I think once Halloween, fall and Christmas have passed I'll try the plate rack idea. The metal bars are all connected to each other as one piece that lifts up so that you can fit your filler items into the base of the feeder. Do you see the crusty patina on this thing? Just like I like it. I'm sure I'll be using it a lot in many of my seasonal vignettes.

About a year ago, in Thrill of the Hunt #76, I shared a much longer vintage chicken feeder that I got at the Pecatonica, IL Flea Market. If you live in the Chicago area and you've never been, they hold it twice yearly, in spring and fall, and trust me, it's well worth the trip.

I can't use this one as a dish rack since it doesn't have a metal rack, but I still love filling it chock full of seasonal goodies like these velvet pumpkins and dried hydrangeas.

Another lovely vintage item I picked up at the same estate sale was this gorgeous basket. I think it could just as easily have been from Pottery Barn, don't you think? It only cost $6.00! I love that it's HUGE. It's just perfect for storing warm cozy throws and blankets as well as extra pillows for those cold winter days ahead here in the midwest. Right now it's on display in front of another Thrill of the Hunt-worthy item that I've yet to share (can you say white fireplace mantel?). I'll tackle that one another day -- it's going to be quite a project.

I also love its unique shape and oh, those wooden handles!

I can honestly picture this basket being used on laundry days gone by to haul freshly washed sheets outside to hang on the line. Great classic baskets never go out of style, wouldn't you agree?

Well, that's it for today, friends!
I hope I've inspired you in some way and that
