DIY French Farmhouse Tall Floor Candle Holders

July 6, 2021

It's always a great day when you turn a thrift store find into a well-loved piece of home decor. That's exactly what I did with two dark and dated tall floor candle holders. Read on to get the easy-peasy details of the DIY French farmhouse transformation.

DIY French Farmhouse Tall Floor Candle Holders

If you've been hesitant to try painting something to achieve a totally different look, this is a super-easy introduction to the process.

tall brown candle holders

These are the dark and dated tall floor candle holders I found at the thrift store. I haven't seen any tall floor candle holders like this at the right price in ages. The taller one was $4.99 and the smaller one was $2.99. So I was super happy to find these (they're huge!). They were actually in different locations from each other in the store. Finding the pair was a lovely fluke.

I could see that the ornate details were just right for a French farmhouse transformation. And the transformation was so stinkin' easy that anyone can do it. All you need are some thrifty candle holders, some paint and some sandpaper.

While I couldn't wait to paint over the weird coppery-effect finish on the main body, I was tempted to leave the verdigris finish on the ornamental leaf detail as is.

But I just wasn't sure how that would look, so instead I decided to paint the entire candle holder one color and be done with it. No mystery as to what color I used.

Yup, there it is. Can you believe it? I was thrilled with the transformation. From dark and dated to shabby chic French farmhouse.

I do believe I was able to make them look as if they've been around for a long time.

I thought they looked fabulous on the hearth of my master bedroom faux fireplace, topped with LED candles.

My vintage-inspired cathedral window arches are just perfect for this farmhouse mantel.

They totally match my flea market shabby chic painted French farmhouse side table and vintage corbel. Now for the details of how I completed the transformation.

How To Make A DIY French Farmhouse Tall Floor Candle Holder

Can of Rust-oleum Chalked Paint in Linen White

First I thoroughly wiped down the candle holders with Lysol wipes, making sure to remove any dirt. Then I slapped on two coats of my fave paint, Rust-Oleum Chalked ultra matte paint in Linen White. One of the reasons I love it is because you usually don't need a primer, even on dark wood.

After the two coats were dry, I used sandpaper to distress the paint in all the right places. Traditional places to distress are anywhere you might expect to see natural wear and tear on a piece. Then I used a clean paintbrush to brush away any residual paint dust left on the candle holders and that was that.

The overall distressing gives them that farmhouse look while the distressed raised intricate details give them the added French flair. So for all of $8.00 and a little paint I am super happy with how they turned out.

Well, that's it for today, friends!

Lovely. And your tutorial, as usual, is clear and very easy to follow. I have a tall RED candlestick that I have debating--should I leave it Christmasy or transform it?!?
