Our Hopeful Home: Dollar Tree Floating Metal Frames and Fall Decal Window Clings

Today I'm sharing a super cheap and easy way to create some DIY fall decor in your home with Dollar Tree fall decal window clings and floating metal frames.

A few months ago I found this adorable 4x6 in. floating metal frame (and the velvet pumpkins if you can believe it) at Dollar Tree. There was only one left and I understood why.

I mean, how cute is it? I love it. I even love the fake "picture" they placed inside it. What's not to love about a bicycle with a basket full of flowers?

Then today I went to Dollar Tree to investigate their latest fall finds and I found this sheet of decal window clings with the cutest fall sayings on them. And a light bulb went off. Could I put one of these decals inside the floating metal frame? Yes!

I knew that this decal in particular would be just the right size for the job. (I also can't wait to use some of the other decals in more fall projects.)

Floating frames aren't the same as traditional frames, so I'm including some instructions on how they're different and how to use them.

How To Fill A Floating Metal Frame

1. With a see-through frame like this one, there are actually two panes of glass that surround your photo, one in front of it and one in back of it. I first had to take the two panes apart (by pulling up the metal clips on the back and separating the panes) and then take out the piece of paper with the cute bicycle on it.

Alert: The paper was attached to the glass pane with some super-sticky tape, which I had a hard time scraping off the glass. But once I added a little Goo Gone to it and some elbow grease, the gunk disappeared. Then I cleaned both panes of glass with some glass cleaner and a paper towel.

2. Next, I gently pulled off the decal I had chosen from the sheet and applied it to what would be the inner, or back, piece of glass.

3. Then I replaced the back piece of glass into the frame, behind the front piece of glass, repositioned the metal clips on the back and called it a day.

(NOTE: You need to be careful while doing this since the frame has a metal bar that it leans on, and that bar is attached on either side of the frame. So when you move or pull out the bar part of it gets closer to the glass plate and could scratch the glass. You'll have to find the sweet spot, so to speak, for inserting and removing the glass panes from the frame due to this metal bar.)

It fit perfectly and I was very pleased with the result. I set it on the mantel between two yarn-covered pumpkins from Target ($1 each) and a brown glass bottle (also Target, $5). I filled the bottle with dried strawflowers from the summer garden.

It was hard to get a decent picture because, well, it's glass -- so glare and all that. But also I think it's hard to see because there's nothing behind the decal.

So I decided to try a trick. I placed a piece of plain white paper behind the decal (after using the glass pane as a template to get the right size). I think it made a nice difference in being able to appreciate the details of the decal, including the colors.

If you're unable to purchase the same items at your local Dollar Tree you can always attempt to buy them from Dollar Tree online (however, there's usually a minimum number of each item(s) that you must purchase). If you'd rather not do that, you can purchase similar items:

Fall decals/window clings

And just like with any regular picture frame, once the season is over, I can just return the decal to its original package and fill the frame with something else, like an actual photograph.
