Traditional Fall Decor Ideas

October 20, 2022

Fall is my favorite time of year. And today I'm sharing some of my latest traditional and/or vintage fall decor ideas that I've implemented in my own home this year.

I don't know about you, but my decorating style has changed many times over the years. While I have always been drawn to vintage, DIY and repurposed decor, I've sometimes allowed myself to be influenced by decorating trends that don't necessarily have any real staying power. I'm trying to get away from that, and put the focus back on what I consider to be timeless style pieces.

Welcome to a mini fall tour of the living room and dining room!

FALL LIVING ROOM

Here I've combined two different style trends -- traditional French country (thrifted Bergere chair) with traditional farmhouse (buffalo check DIY fall pillows from placemats.)

There's no written rule that you can't have both. My living room is decorated in whites and creams, so it's a welcome addition to have some fall colors pop throughout the room.

Mantels are always fun to style. Rather than use a bunch of bright oranges and yellows, I decided to go with a more muted faux floral arrangement from last year.

I think it makes a lovely statement situated between the blue and white chinoiserie ginger jars.

I love the rustic look of the wooden box.

I have to admit that I succumbed to a trendy element here -- the "Hello Pumpkin" mini wood bead garland with wooden tag. It was $1.00 at Target's Bullseye Playground, so I couldn't resist. The pumpkin shaped basket was a Michael's purchase from last year. Again, I love the texture and rustic feel the basket lends to the room.

I could not be happier with the hydrangea crop we've been blessed with this year. I'm like a crazy person filling up vases and baskets all over the house -- like this painted seagrass basket I picked up on clearance (in a two-pack) at Aldi's. I like how it looks in front of the fireplace in the living room.

FALL DINING ROOM

Hydrangeas are also front and center in the dining room.

Each season brings a fun challenge in decorating these DIY farmhouse shelves.

1. Brown Transferware and Other Porcelain Pieces

This year I finally had enough brown transferware to set up in my vintage aluminum chicken feeder (that I use as a plate rack).

Both the dessert plates and the platter were made by Alfred Meakin in Staffordshire England.

The pattern is called Fair Winds.

brown and white painted cow milk creamer pitcher

I continued the brown and white theme with this thrifted brown and white porcelain cow creamer I got at Goodwill for $1.99. The makers mark says it was hand painted in Portugal. I first shared it in Thrill of the Hunt #92.

While not transferware, I still thought this brown splatterware sugar bowl and creamer set made a nice addition to the fall dining room shelf decor.

2. Baskets

I like to use all types of baskets in my decor year-round. This vintage Longaberger basket vase was perfect for displaying even more of my dried hydrangeas.

And here is seagrass basket number 2, also filled with hydrangeas!

I've actually placed three baskets on top of each other -- a thrifted woven file cabinet basket, a thrifted large vintage picnic basket, and the second seagrass basket filled with hydrangeas. I decided to leave my painted vintage farmhouse china hutch in its non-fall decor state.

Two more baskets are on the sideboard beneath the shelves -- a smaller, thrifted vintage picnic basket and the pumpkin-shaped lidded basket (I moved it in from the living room). And I think wood bead garlands always add a welcome touch of rustic texture to any arrangement.

3. Copper

I also love using copper for fall decor -- it adds warm color and a contrasting texture versus the more rustic elements. This is a vintage brass pot I purchased at one of my favorite local vintage haunts.

I have many more much-loved copper pieces that have yet to be unearthed from their storage bins. I'm not sure if I'll be getting to them this year but at least I've got this copper pot out as part of the mix.

4. Ironstone and Milk Glass

In my opinion, vintage ironstone pieces are always in season. They're a staple in my home decor year-round, along with milk glass pieces like this milk glass creamer filled with faux boxwood.

I haven't actually counted all my ironstone pitchers (and soup tureens) but suffice it to say I have a lot of them. I love lining them up side by side on my dining room shelves. I also love filling them with flowers.

For my fall display I filled one with some vintage celluloid flatware

I usually pick up my traditional ironstone at thrift stores, flea markets and estate sales.

I also like to spice things up with a few non-traditional pieces like this modern porcelain measuring cup, as well as the other half of my vintage milk glass sugar bowl and creamer set given to me by my daughter.

Kaldun and Boyle vintage ironstone pitcher

This particular vintage ironstone pitcher is one of my favorites. I love all the details in the design. I got if for $2.99 at Goodwill. Its makers' mark says Kaldun and Boyle.

Ironstone and milk glass really do go with everything. You can pick up inexpensive pieces and easily start your collection today. Just be forewarned that it's addicting!

Well, that's it for today, friends!
