One of my favorite DIY projects of all time is the fake naked cake I created with nothing but some crafting foam rounds and spackle. Yes, you heard that right -- spackle. Over the years and seasons I've decorated it in different ways and loved each and every iteration of it.

So much so that I even wrote a post about
how to decorate a fake naked Christmas cake.
I really had fun coming up with creative ideas for that one.
My original version of the faux naked cake was covered in silk flowers. I shared how I made and decorated the cake in How To Make A Fake Naked Cake.
Today's fake naked cake will be decorated with flowers, but this time they'll be fresh flowers from my garden! (Don't worry, this can be easily accomplished with store-bought fresh flowers as well.)
I finally planted dahlias this summer and boy, did it pay off! While I enjoy placing dahlia-filled vases all over the house, I recently had an "aha" moment.
Why not put some of these gorgeous fresh dahlia blooms atop my fake naked cake?
So I chose a few of my favorite dahlia blooms from the daily flower harvest and literally plopped them atop the cake. I displayed the cake alongside a vintage thrifted Asian-inspired teapot and two blue and white transfer ware tea cups.
The tea set and mother of pearl flatware sits atop my DIY distressed wooden riser with beaded trim.
Aren't these blooms gorgeous? How could I not spread the beauty and use them in all possible places?
My marble topped cake plate was just perfect for this naked cake
display.
TIPS:
1. While I didn't have any on hand (but for the one above that was too big and too green), the best way to go would have been to place each of the cut flowers into a clear floral water tube.
That will guarantee at least a few good days of "fresh" flowers atop your naked cake.
2. You can always cover up the clear floral tubes and flower stems with either fresh leaves (store-bought flowers always come with "fillers" which would be perfect for this) or faux leaves, which I used here as added decoration along with the fresh dahlias.
No matter how many dahlias I harvest from the garden, I never get tired of seeing them. I am so grateful for this abundance of beauty!
Of course you don't have to decorate a fake cake. You can just as easily decorate a real cake with flowers. However, you'll have to be much more discerning as to what flowers you use -- they have to be edible! (And dahlias are edible!)
Below is a list of some popular edible flowers (not comprehensive):
