How to Make a Cabbage Flower Vase

You don't have to like the taste of cabbage to enjoy the beauty of a flower-filled cabbage vase. As a recent cabbage ware fan, I'm excited to share with you how to make a fresh cabbage flower vase.

1. Using your glass jar as a sizing guide, cut out a hole from the middle of the cabbage head, large enough to fit your glass jar. Be careful with the knife!

2. To make the gutting easier, first slice a bit off the bottom of the head so that it sits level. The bottom slice is on the left in the above picture.

3. After making the initial round cut and removing the core (seen above on the right), be prepared to "saw" off some of the insides until you get just the right fit for the glass (shavings shown above in middle).

At this point you can also peel off a few of the outer leaves to use for display purposes.

4. Carefully insert the glass into the cabbage head. Mine took some force to get it in.

Don't worry if the jar sticks out at the top, since the glass won't be that noticeable once you fill it with flowers.

5. Using a small pitcher or measuring cup with a lip, carefully fill the jar with water and add your floral preservative (if applicable).

6. Use your shears to cut the flowers down to fit into the glass jar and arrange as you would any other floral arrangement.

7.  Display your cabbage vase on a cake plate or decorative pedestal. Layer the saved cabbage leaves underneath the cabbage head.

If you're not used to seeing a "real" cabbage head vase, you might mistake one for actual cabbage ware.

My kids saw it displayed in the kitchen area near my cabbage ware collection and they were like "w-h-a??" My daughter had to touch it to convince herself it was a real cabbage.

Whether you have cabbage ware or not, this cabbage flower vase promises to be the life of the party. Or at the very least, a great conversation piece!

I particularly love how the orange roses and carnations really pop against the pale chartreuse cabbage head case.

The pink glass cake plate serves as a decorative riser. And a few individual cabbage leaves look lovely displayed directly under the cabbage.

So how long will this cabbage vase last? It is food, after all. Surprisingly, after a week, mine still looked pretty fresh. However, I made sure to remove any browning cabbage leaves on the outside as I saw them. That's key to keeping it looking fresh.

The leaves I laid underneath it wilted after a day or two. Luckily, I had saved a few cabbage leaves wrapped in paper towels in the fridge and replaced them as necessary.

My best advice? To be assured of the freshest cabbage vase presentation possible, don't make it until the day before or the day of your event, e.g., spring luncheon, Easter brunch, etc. Then you know it will be its freshest. And remember -- always make sure the vase has sufficient water!

NOTE: I was going to place the cabbage head (sans glass jar) in the fridge each night in the hopes of extending its life, but never really felt the need to do so. However, if your home is exceptionally warm, I would recommend you try it.

Last but not least, I've seen that some people use floral foam instead of a jar. My only caveat in that case is that you really need to keep something under the cabbage head (like a plate or saucer), because the foam will inevitably leak!

I am thrilled with my cabbage flower vase and will definitely consider making it again. Could you imagine making this as a hostess gift? The hostess would be floored to say the least! Then again, it's always nice to wow the people at home.

Well, that's it for today, friends!
