I recently came across a sweet spring vignette from an online
retailer that looked very familiar. And why did it look familiar?
Because I own some of the same items in the photo. Of course my items
were thrifted, so I got them for less.
As I've previously pointed out in my savvy shopper series, there are alternatives to the uber expensive home decor items we see, day in and day out, online and in stores. We just have to keep our eyes open. And be ready to snatch them up when they cross our path.
This post contains affiliate links. A purchase of any one of these items helps to support this blog and its creative efforts at no cost to you. To read more, please see my disclosure page.
It also helps to have a handle on what you like, what type of decor
you're drawn to. Once you know that, you'll be able to identify great home
decor finds for less -- whether it be at an estate sale or a thrift store.
You can't go wrong if you love it! There, I said it.
When I saw this vignette from an online retailer I couldn't help but smile. They were actually trying to sell the framed rabbit wall art. Ironically, I have that exact white cable knit pillow, as well as a reasonable facsimile of that basket and faux tulips. Which got me thinking.
Seeing this vignette was great because it showed me how I could decorate my living room with essentially the same elements, for less.
(I'm assuming I got both items for less based on the fact that they were
thrifted. Since they're not actually for sale in the online ad I don't know what
they cost elsewhere; my own prices are listed below.)
The pillow was an estate sale find for $4.00. Yes, I said $4.00. I shared it on the blog a few years ago in Thrill of the Hunt #77. It has remained a staple in my series of rotating throw pillows ever since.
The basket was a Goodwill purchase. I knew I hit the jackpot when I found it -- my cost: $4.99. I've found comparable woven water hyacinth baskets selling for $20-$30. My faux pink tulips are from Michael's.
In lieu of the rabbit art I hung a large boxwood wreath with a velvet bow. Boxwood is my go-to in decorating just about anywhere in the house.
The bench, a gift from my husband, came from a Decor Steals "Steal It" box. I love how I can dress it up or down, or just leave it as is. The light wood really brightens up the space.
The preppy scalloped pillows were a Target Bullseye Playground $5.00 (each) purchase.
The tall handled basket was also thrifted. I love filling it with white birch logs as it sits next to the fireplace.
If your local Target doesn't carry these pillows, there are some similar reasonably priced pillow covers on Amazon, like this set of 2 cotton scallop pillow covers.
I've been totally obsessed with all things scalloped lately -- like my scalloped tray, scalloped bowl, scalloped cafe rechargeable table lamp (you can find all of these in my Wal-Mart storefront Top Picks) and my DIY scalloped chinoiserie tray.
While my decorating style has focused mainly on neutrals in the past, I am definitely leaning a bit more toward adding colors into the mix, namely blues and greens. And while I do think the pink and white pillow in the online vignette is cute, I much prefer my blue and green scalloped pillows. They pop nicely against the cream bench cushion and cable knit pillow.
Whether you're someone who rarely sees the need for making changes in your decor, or you're more like me and seem to be changing it up on a regular basis, I think you'll appreciate the sense of accomplishment you'll feel after even just a small tweak to the status quo -- especially if you were able to create the look for less!
To recap: Keep an eye out for things or looks that speak to you -- whether it's something in a magazine, a T.V. ad, a local store (including thrift and vintage) or an online retail store. Take pictures and store them on your phone if that will help (or take screenshots and place them in a folder on your computer for easy reference).
Then when you're out and about and see one of those things, or a
reasonable facsimile thereof (for a reasonable price, of course), bring it
home with you. Over time you'll be surprised at the level of decorating
creativity that kicks in once you start collecting things you really love.
Well, that's it for today, friends!
